What Is The Polygamist About?

The show opens at a funeral. Jonasi is already dead, and the women who loved him, endured him, or both, are assembled in their mourning clothes. You spend the next 22 episodes finding out exactly how it came to this.

Jonasi (played by S'dumo Mtshali) is a wealthy South African businessman who has built an empire, a beautiful family, and a very elaborate lie.

On the surface, everything is immaculate. His wife Joyce (Gugu Gumede) is a polished social media influencer, the picture of wifely perfection.

Butttt... Behind closed doors, Jonasi is juggling multiple women, making promises he has no intention of keeping, and leaving damage everywhere he walks without ever seeming particularly bothered by it.

The story is not really about polygamy as a cultural practice. It is about what happens when one man's unchecked appetites collide with the lives of everyone around him, and what the women left in his wake choose to do about it.

Adapted from Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi's novel by showrunner Akin Omotoso and produced by Stained Glass Productions, the team behind Uzalo and The Wife, this is Netflix's first South African supernovela.

Jonasi Gomora

He is the kind of man who is charming enough that you understand why people fell for him, and dangerous enough that you dread what is coming every time he smiles.

He is a devoted father. A living partner to more than one woman and he walks with the arrogance of someone who has never truly been held accountable.

The actor, Mitshali embodies this role so well that you'd hate him.

Joyce Gomora

This where the show gets genuinely interesting. Gugu Gumede (starring as Joyce) is easy to sympathize with as she spends years holding a fractured family together through sheer force of will.

But the show refuses to keep her in victim territory. She is also calculating, often ruthless, and fully aware of the power she holds as the woman at the top of a broken structure.

You will spend entire episodes simultaneously rooting for her and uncomfortably aware of what she is willing to do to stay on top. Gumede makes all of it believable.

Mpumi Gomora

Jonasi's daughter played by Noluthando Shabalala, is the moral conscience of the whole story.

Her relationship with her father, Jonasi, is heavily strained due to his emotional unavailability, repeated betrayals, and the eventual breakdown of her parents' marriage.

So she holds her father accountable with more consistency and less sentimentality than anyone else in the cast, which hits differently when you consider who young women in traditional African households are usually raised to be.

Should You Watch The Polygamist?

You certainly should!

If you liked The Wife or Scandal!, this is a natural next watch. If you are drawn to drama that doubles as a real conversation about power, loyalty, and what women are expected to absorb in marriage, The Polygamist delivers.

It is rated TV-MA for good reason. There are mature themes, adult content, and sex scenes that have generated debate. Those scenes are not gratuitous though; they are central to showing Jonasi's behavior as compulsion rather than just infidelity, and that framing changes everything about how you read him.

The Polygamist is compulsive, emotionally honest, and exactly as messy as it needs to be. You will watch to find out what Jonasi does next. You will stay because of what the women around him do with the wreckage. And you will finish it asking questions that have nothing to do with the show.
